You’ve gathered your courage, taken a deep breath, and jail-broken your iPad. If you’re not sure how to do this, take a look at one of our earlier posts here on iPad.net. Now your iPad is free of its fetters, the possibilities of its freedom are endless. You’ll have to have Cydia installed on your iPad already. There are then countless things you can do with a jail-broken, but many of them take a little technical know how. Today I’ll give you the inside information on how to get your iPad responsive to voice control.

This is a hack for iPad 3G. Other Apple devices, such as iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touch, already boast voice control technology. It may well be that the upgraded iOS4 for iPad will include this capability, but there’s no indication of this in any of Apple’s press releases, so it looks like you’ll have to do it yourself. Here’s how:

1. Open Cydia, locate ‘OpenSSh’, install and reboot your iPad;
2. Use your 3G to connect to your computer, making sure iTunes is closed;
3. Download the SFTP and FTP client to access your iPad system files from: Cyberduck for Mac or WinSCP for Windows;
4. Run the clients depending to your MAC or Windows platform, then enter the log-in details on your iPad.

Log-in Details from WinSCP for Windows:
· Hostname: The IP address of your iPad
· User Name: root
· Password: alpine
· Protocol: SCP

Log-in Details from Cyberduck:
· Server: The IP address of your iPad
· Username: root
· Password: alpine
· Protocol: SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)

5. Log in to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/
6. Use TextEdit editor to open file K48AP.plist. When the file is open in TextEdit, add the lines highlighted in the above picture: <key>voice-control</key> <true>
7. Save then close the app
8. Reboot your iPad and you should now have voice control on your iPad.
9. To activate voice control features on your iPad, hold down the home button until the voice control screen pops up.
10. To make sure your voice control is calibrated to iPad, go to /System/Library/VoiceServices/PlugIns/Base.vsplugin/English.Iproj, then open ‘Help.strings’, change everything that says ‘iPod’ to ‘iPad’.
11. Voice control should work perfectly on your iPad.
