Apple has forever changed the way we listen to music with the iPod. With next month’s debut of the iTV, it could also alter the way we watch television. Now Apple may be going into the TV rental market.
According to Bloomberg News, Apple is very close to negotiating deals to offer TV shows for rent at 99¢ each. The companies involved are News Corp. (parent company of FOX), CBS and the Walt Disney Company (parent company of ABC). Not surprisingly, those luddites at NBC are lagging behind, as usual.
Shows would be available for 48 hour rentals through the iTunes store and can be viewed on the iPod, iPad or iPhone. I’m kinda scratching my head over this, since the most recent eps of most current series are already available online through Hulu or the network websites. There has to be more to this than we’re hearing so far.

Hulu pays crap to the networks (like pennies per view) where this service would more than likely give networks 50-70 cents per rental. Also I don’t think this is a move to take over the market it’s more a move to keep their current client base happy and avoid jumping ship to NetFlix or Amazon for similar content.

The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
