Apple has done some of its homework and has patched the Shatter bootrom and limera1n jailbreaking on the iPad 2. In simple terms this means that it has become more difficult for the Dev team to jailbreak the iPad 2.
MuscleNerd (member of the Dev Team) tweeted that the iPad 2 bootrom (iBoot-838.3) was compiled as early as March 2010. This means that limera1n was already closed by that time.
Also, one of the things that Shatter depends on in the iPad has also been closed in March 2010. This results in the fact that the iPad 2 will have to be jailbroken solely using userland.
Jailbreaking tools like PwnageTool, Snowbreeze and greenpoison for iOS 4.2.1 created by the iPhone Dev Team, Chronic Dev team and iH8snow all use the limera1n exploit which was discovered by Geohot
If you were wondering if using userland would make the task easy then there is some bad news as well. As discovered earlier by Joshua Hill of the Chronic Dev Team, iOS 4.3 comes pre-installed with ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) which makes jailbreaking more difficult through userland.
However, this news was to be expected. Apple has continuously been striving towards making sure hackers do not get the better of them in the pursuit of jailbreaking.
One thing is for sure. Even if Apple is making jailbreaking tougher, we can count on the Dev Team to jailbreak iOS 4.3 sooner than later.
Hopefully in a few days, weeks or months (hopefully not!) we will be able to jailbreaking the iPad 2. Ipad.net will be there to bring you a comprehensive guide and steps once it’s available.
