FaceTime Freezing on the iPad 2

The iPad 2 hasn’t been out two weeks and already users are reporting an annoying glitch. This one involves FaceTime, which just came to the iPad with the second incarnation of the tablet. Numerous posters to the Apple Support Discussion forum have complained about the iPad 2 freezing while making video calls.

Here’s a typical post from user chucknelson: “I had this problem on my iPad 2 as well. I restored the iPad and it was fixed, but during a FaceTime call I switched to the back camera and it froze the video on both ends of the call (but NOT the local video / video of me on my end and video of them on their end).”

Some users have gotten temporary relief by doing a restore from the iPad’s backup or restoring to the factory settings. Another possible fix came from jollyguy23, who recommended this after a frozen call: Make another FaceTime call, end it, then call back immediately.

So what’s causing these problems? The suspected culprit is iOS 4.3, which came installed on the iPad 2. This could be the reason that Apple is rumored to be releasing iOS 4.3.1 in just a couple of weeks, very soon after the launch of iOS 4.3 earlier this month.

A bug that affects so many owners of a brand new device does make you wonder if the iPad 2 was rushed to market too soon in response to the competition from rivals like the Motorola Xoom and RIM PlayBook.

FaceTime is one of the features that Apple fans were most looking forward to in the new iPad, so it’s especially disappointing that so many are having trouble using it. Let’s hope that iOS 4.3.1 upgrade will fix the problem—without bringing new ones of its own.
